Shenandoah Samplers are back!  These are a series of day trips in which we explore various sections of Shenandoah National Park at different times of the year.

This fall, we will be touring the Central District, which includes many miles of trails and some of the best views in the park.  We’ll begin at the Thornton Gap entrance to Skyline Drive and head south toward Swift Run Gap, stopping for hikes and breaks along the way.

Our samplers usually include three or four short hikes, each with something different to offer.  This trip’s featured hikes include a waterfall, a scenic vista, and a fun but challenging rock scramble with a 360-degree view:

  • White Oak Canyon (4.6-mile out-and-back version)
  • Hawksbill Summit (2.9-mile circuit version)
  • Bearfence Summit (1.2 mile circuit).

That’s a total mileage of around 8.5 miles and elevation gain of around 2,000 feet.

We’ll stop for lunch between hikes at Skyland Lodge, so you can either brown bag it or pick up a ready-made sandwich from their cafe.

Sunset time on 11/9 is 5:05pm.  If we time it right, we may be able to catch the sunset from Bearfence Summit!

The return time is approximate.  If you have plans that require you to be back in Richmond at a specific time, please communicate this prior to carpooling with someone, or consider choosing a different hike.

Optional stop for dinner on the way back if there is interest.
