Sometimes we want to hike in the woods, but don’t want to drive 2+ hours. Sometimes we don’t want to get up early. This is a series of hikes that are not too far and not too close; not too long and not too short. We call them ‘Modest Ambles’. Let’s explore these all year and keep in practice.
For this hike, we’ll explore C and D loop trails at Freedom Park which is situated on a 600-acre forested retreat in Williamsburg. I am limiting the attendees on this one since we are hiking on ‘bike trails’. I am assured that hikers are allowed, and when I scouted this did not meet a single biker, but ya’ll know the drill. Trails are officially closed to bikers after and during inclement weather. Also, I did not scout the entire trail as was being eaten alive by large flying bugs last May, so there will be ad-hoc distance changes if we get turned around (which is likely).
The return time is approximate. If you have plans that require you to be back in Richmond at a specific time, please communicate this prior to carpooling with someone, or consider choosing a different hike.
Since these are shorter hikes let’s combine them with visits to local wineries for tastings and bon vivanterie. We can stop by one of the 3 wineries off 64 on way back if there is interest (OPTIONAL).
