Each year, tourists flock to Virginia for its sandy beaches, majestic mountains, and historical landmarks…but outdoorsy types like us know our greatest treasure is actually our vast collection of rocky, picturesque gaps!  With this in mind, CVT is proud to present a yearlong tour of the Great Gaps of Virginia!

Join us for an extended Labor Day weekend for three nights of camping and adventure at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park!  We have reserved a large group campsite at the fabulous Wilderness Road Campground, just a few miles from the visitors’ center.

Activities within the park are primarily hiking and guided tours of some of the more popular features.  There are a few other parks and areas of interest a short drive away from the Cumberland Gap area.

The cost is $12 per person and includes three nights in the group camp site.

Friday, 9/1:  This will be mainly a travel day.  We’ll depart Short Pump at 8:00am and take the 6-hour drive to Cumberland Gap, stopping for lunch at Skeeter’s World Famous Hot Dogs in Wytheville at around 11:45am.  Then we’ll set up camp, check out the visitors’ center, and perhaps take a short hike before group dinner at the campsite.

Saturday, 9/2:  Guided tours are not available on this date, so this will likely be a hiking day.  The featured group hike will be an 8-9 mile trip to the famous Sand Cave and White Rocks.  Shorter hike options are available as well.  Following the hike, we’ll have a late lunch/early dinner and then head out for an evening tour of the Hensley Settlement.

Sunday, 9/3:   In the morning, you can join us for zipline canopy tour at nearby Pine Mountain Resort State Park in Kentucky.  After the zipline trip, we’ll return to Cumberland Gap for a guided tour of the Gap Cave at 12:30pm.  You are responsible for making your own reservations for these tours – don’t delay!!!

Monday, 9/4:  Pack up and head home.

These activities are, of course, only suggestions and are optional and subject to change based on weather and interest.  Feel free to suggest your own activities.  Look for a planning dinner/meeting sometime in July.
