Stonewall Resort State Park

Who’s up for an autumn getaway??

‘Tis the season we’ve been waiting for; chilly nights, crisp days; crackling fires and leaves crunching beneath your feet. Oh and did I mention- abject terror??!!ย  Yes, you can have all of this if you sign up for this hair-raising, sweater-wearing, marshmallow-toasting celebration in spooky but beautiful Weston, WV.

We will not be roughing it this weekend, as we will be staying at the beautiful Stonewall Jackson resort lodge on the shores of Lake Stonewall Jackson. The lodge boasts 3 different restaurants, an indoor/outdoor heated pool, miniature golf course, 13 miles of hiking trails, fire pit, spa on site and many other amenities.

If that isn’t enough to entice you, we’ll kick things up a notch. In addition to the breathtaking scenery of the resort, there is another more nefarious resident of this small town, namely the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. This National Historic landmark was a sanctuary for the mentally ill going back to the mid 1800s. Every year the Asylum makes the most of its naturally creepy atmosphere and invites the public to enter after dark for a haunted house experience like no other. On Saturday, October 5th there will be a fall festival on the grounds of the Asylum with food, crafts, costume contests, and more. This will also include opportunities to explore the Asylum by day via guided tour.

We can spend free time hiking, enjoying the lake, or exploring the town of Weston.

No Trail Bucks required to RSVP.ย  For this trip, all lodging reservations will be made individually. I reserved a room with 2 queen sized beds and a lake view for $176 per night. The resort has a deal where if you reserve early you get 25% off your nightly fee (my 176 was after the 25%.) This deal IS available online under “book lodge” – check in on Friday Oct 4, checkout Monday October 7. www.stonewallresort.com

This is a great way to kick off fall and the Halloween season– Join us if you dare!!!!!

Howdy everybody. So looking forward to this…the Asylum has been on my list for a long time!!!
Been working an itinerary. There is some good stuff to see\do in the area.
Friday: head out and stop for lunch in the town of Helvetia…this is a tiny town that embraces it’s Swiss heritage and has a Swiss\German restaurant that may be worth checking out. Friday afternoon\evening we’ll hang around the resort and have dinner together.
Saturday: ASYLUM DAY. In the morning we can hike, kayak or even do a Segway tour at the State Park Resort after breakfast. Then it’s off to the main event. We’ll check out the Fall Festival on the grounds, do a daytime tour(they offer several different types) or 2 and then have dinner someplace nearby. After, we can do the Haunted House as well as a flashlight tour.
Sunday: Hiking etc. there are 16 miles of trails in and around the park, and there are also other parks and historic sites in the area…also there is a Museum of American glass in the town of Weston that may be worth checking out.
Monday: Check out and head back to RVA. We can stop for a hike on the way home if there is interest and will probably grab lunch on the road as well.
Trying to plan it so those coming late\leaving early don’t miss the Asylum stuff.
Also, the hotel has an indoor\outdoor heated pool.

Should be just 7 of us meeting at Joe’s — Dee is driving separately and will meet us at the restaurant in Helvetia.

  14. Jamie K. 8 months ago

My preference is to either drive or ride shotgun

  15. JoeGiasullo 8 months ago

If I donโ€™t see you guys tomorrow morning please donโ€™t park in the driveway or block the driveway or mailbox. Thanks.
