Douthat State Park
Join us for an extended holiday winter weekend of fun and adventure at beautiful Douthat State Park in Millboro, Virginia! It has been years since we have visited Douthat, which features awesome mountain views and miles of scenic hiking trails. Time to go back!
Winter is a great time to hike. The humidity and pesky bugs are gone, and the leaves are off the trees, allowing for better views. Time and weather permitting, we can tackle Blue Suck Falls and Beards Mountain, two of the premiere hikes in the park. We can also pay a visit to nearby Clifton Forge, which has a few restaurants and a neat little railroad museum. Or if you prefer, just relax in the lodge by the stone fireplace and read or play games. It’s up to you!
We’ll be staying inside the park in Creasy Lodge, a large rustic lodge with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large living area with a stone fireplace and vaulted ceiling, a deck, and a fully equipped kitchen. We stayed at this lodge for our winter retreat in 2014. Plenty of room for us to hang out and be comfortable!
The cost is only $75 per person for two nights, two people per room. All except one bedroom have bunk beds; the other has a queen bed. One or two well behaved dogs are welcome, but please check with me first. 🙂 I’m open to options for meals, but I’m thinking breakfast and lunch will be on your own, and for dinner we’ll order pizza or ride into Clifton Forge.
Saturday, 1/18: Leave Richmond at 9am (carpool location TBA); drive to Douthat and hike Beards Mountain; check into the lodge; pizza run or group dinner in Clifton Forge; fun & games in the lodge.
Sunday, 1/19: Hike Blue Suck Falls; group dinner; more mischief & mayhem in the lodge!
Monday, 1/20: Check out; head home. Optional North Mountain/Pete’s Cave bonus hike on the way home if there is interest. (Note Monday is Martin Luther King Day.)
Feel free to bring your favorite DVDs and board games to share.
