A Fistful Of Hollers: Riprap Hollow (Day Hike, 9-10 Miles, Strenuous)

Well folks, the south section of Skyline Drive remains closed due to downed trees from the recent ice storm. This will prevent us from accessing the Riprap trailhead. I was thinking of doing the Humpback Rock/Dobie Mountain loop (7 miles) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’m open to other suggestions.

I am always up for anything, so the alternate sounds fine to me!

I’m up for an alternate too.

    White Oak Canyon/Cedar Run?

The south district of Skyline Drive remains closed, making the Riprap parking area inaccessible. I’ll keep an eye out for updates during the week. I may need to switch to another hike of similar length/elevation in the central or north district. White Oak/Cedar Run is a possibility depending on how much rain we get this week. Worried about crossing Cedar Run.

I hiked White Oak/ Cedar Run yesterday, the trails were in good shape with some snow at the top of the mountain. All water crossings were passable. If you decide to do this hike I probably won’t do it again.

Rip Rap Hollow remains my elusive wandering…so many years of hiking and have never made it up there!! 😀

I’m tired of postponing this hike…let’s give it a shot! We should be able to access it from the “back door” trailhead on the western park boundary, but parking is limited, so everyone needs to carpool. If we have any issues getting there, plan B is the Humpback Rock/Dobie Mountain loop off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Snow melt could impact stream crossings, but hopefully 4-5 days of no rain will work in our favor. Gonna be a beautiful day on Saturday! 🙂

Some post-hike late lunch/early dinner options for those interested:

We went to the Fishin’ Pig in Farmville a couple of years ago…that was pretty good. Could also go for Tailgate Grill or Blue Mountain Brewery. Or Crozet Pizza of course!

Unfortunately, not feeling 100% (similar to, but not exactly the same as last week).
