A Fistful Of Hollers: First Landing Hollow State Park (Day Hike, 8-10 Miles, Moderate)

Too cold for stream crossings for me! Have fun, see you Sunday in the park.

Does anyone have an extra pole they could spare? One of mine is broken at the moment and I haven’t gotten around to ordering the replacement part.

Temps in Rileyville will be just above freezing with a 50/50 chance of a wintry mix in the late morning/afternoon…but I’m still up for the hike tomorrow if you guys are!

  4. KarenWIlder 5 months ago

I’m on the fence, Brian. Since the rain chances crank up past 50% around 2 or 3, might we consider a shorter version of the hike if there is one? Just a thought…

  5. Dawn F. 5 months ago

Due to time we are leaving for hike, we should be almost done, if not done by 2-3 pm, if we don’t take long breaks.

There are some options to shorten the hike if needed. πŸ™‚

Considering the water crossings and the distance, and the speedier hikers attending….I am bailing. I don’t want to hold y’all back especially with the threat of severe weather moving in. I am sure I COULD keep up, but rushing isn’t my style of hiking (y’all know I like to dawdle and smell the roses) so I’m out. I’ll catch you on the next one!

  8. Dawn F. 5 months ago

    Don’t forget, I am a slow(er) hiker.

I am very on the fence as well. That cold and SNOW would be AWESOME. That cold and RAIN sounds pretty terrible…..May be a game-time decision for me… πŸ™‚

If it helps, Dominion’s meteorologists are expecting mixed precipitation Saturday afternoon quickly changing to freezing rain (i.e. falls as rain and freezes into a coating of ice). The area of the hike is preparing for possible outages overnight Saturday. They are not expecting this ice along I-95, so a hike further east might help avoid bad roads.

Sounds like most people are indifferent at best. πŸ™‚ I’d still like to do something, and I’m open to suggestions. If we head east as Melissa suggested, we could meet at White Oak Village and hit up York River SP, Caledon SP, or even First Landing SP in Virginia Beach. Thoughts?

  12. Dawn F. 5 months ago

If hike is changed, my vote is Caledon or First Landing.

  13. Leigh S. 5 months ago

I think east sounds good too. I’d vote for a closer park and get done before the rain.
I’ve never hiked in any of these parks.
I need some boot time. So I’m in wherever.

According to weather.com, VA Beach is only location (compared to Williamsburg and King George) where it is not supposed to rain until night.

OK, let’s meet at White Oak Village Shopping Center (Laburnum Ave), back of the Target parking lot, at 7am. We’ll go to the beach (First Landing SP). Bring your bathing suits!

    I’m interested…but is 7 am still necessary? πŸ™‚

Re: the 7 am meeting time, I was thinking the same thing as Jamie!

    Jesus…what time then???

  19. Jamie K. 5 months ago

    Don’t drag Jesus into this!!

I don’t want to hijack this thing, but I would suggest 8…subject to group approval, of course.

    OK, 8am…you better be there!

  21. Leigh S. 5 months ago

    I like 8 too.
I think Jesus would approve ?

  22. KimE 5 months ago

    I’m back in–thanks Brian!

  23. KarenWIlder 5 months ago

Sounds like a wise change of plans and fun, but I started a weekend project and gonna ride the motivation wave. Y’all have fun!

Thanks everyone for your flexibility today! I’ll reschedule Heiskell Hollow/Overall Run someday when the roads are open, it isn’t raining or snowing, and the government isn’t shut down. πŸ™‚ CVT shirt points for Dawn & Philip.

Thanks for the hike, Brian and everyone; had a good time and the early dinner at DockSide was great! I just posted some pictures. Enjoy!

    Hello All,
    Nice hiking with you Saturday.
When I got home I had a fraud alert on my credit card. Within an hour of charging my lunch at dockside, someone went on a shopping spree at Nordstrom. I don’t know if they are related but, you may want to check your card too, if you charged lunch.
