Emerald Pond/Browns Gap Trailhead

Each year, tourists flock to Virginia for its sandy beaches, majestic mountains, and historical landmarks…but outdoorsy types like us know our greatest treasure is actually our vast collection of rocky, picturesque hollers!  With this in mind, CVT is proud to present a yearlong tour of the many magnificent hollers of Virginia!

The Browns Hollow hike has three great features:

  1. The climb through the gorge on Browns Run, with small pools and waterfalls.
  2. Emerald Pond, with its spring fed swimming hole nestled in a small hollow off the Bird Knob Trail. The water has exceptional clarity, and in the summer months is surprisingly warm for a mountain pond.
  3. A spectacular vista to the west of New Market from the Massanutten South Trail.

We’ll take an extended break at Emerald Pond to rest and cool off.

The return time is approximate.  If you have plans that require you to be back in Richmond at a specific time, please communicate this prior to carpooling with someone, or consider choosing a different hike.

Optional stop for dinner.  A stop at the famous Pack’s Custard Stand in New Market is non-negotiable!
